Alumni Association Seeks Members, Support
I haven't a clue as to how many of you Class of 1974 members or Friends of the Class know that there is actually an organization known as the Banning High School Alumni Association.
I first found out that there was ... or rather, is ... such a group during a voice chat with Jack Kraft about six months or so ago. And I have to admit that although my curiosity was peaked, I wasn't too terribly interested in joining the group then.
Needless to say my interest waned after that, only to be peaked again during another voice chat about three weeks ago (shortly after Jimmy Beal's funeral) -- this time with Randy Lakin.
Randy gave me the email address, so I decided to make contact and find out more about the BHSAA.
I'm sure all of you know by now that I have received a reply -- both in email and snail mail form -- from Class of 1974 member Kevin deLancey, who is the secretary for the Association.
The BHSAA publishes a newsletter twice a year (usually in spring and fall), and mails it to the group's dues-paying members. Included with the registration form was a copy of the Association's most recent newsletter, dated November of last year.
And I was impressed by what the group is working to accomplish, not only on an annual/bi-annual/tri-annual basis, but also with raising funds for various projects.
One of those projects involves the restoration of "The Drama of Banning" mural in the library of the old Banning High School (which is now Nicolet Middle School). The painting depicts life in Banning when the city was in its infancy back in the early 1900's:
The settlement of the community, and life with the Morongo Native American Tribe;
The growing of almonds, an major crop at the turn of the 20th Century in Banning; and,
The role that the stagecoach lines -- and, later, the Southern Pacific (now Union Pacific) Railroad -- played in bringing settlers to the community.
So far (according to the newsletter), about $3,000.00 has been raised toward restoring this piece of the history of our hometown.
In addition, there are the BHSAA Scholarships which are awarded to very deserving Banning High graduating seniors every year. In 2001, the Association awarded $10,500.00 to nine members of the Class of 2001. BHSAA President Mike Shirley (Class of '78) would like to raise the bar even higher by awarding $15,000.00 to the Class of 2002, and thus help even more students with their college tuition.
Finally, the Association holds an All-Class Reunion every three years so that all living BHS Alumni can gather. The current membership of the Association spans from the most recent graduating class of 2001, all the way back to the Class of 1926! And, in Kevin's words: "It's fun watching the graduates of all the classes get together and mingle."
I noted that because the next All-Class Reunion is slated for the weekend of June 22-23, 2002 (that's this year for those of you still writing "2001" on your checks), and will be held at the Doubletree Hotel, located adjacent to the Ontario International Airport. The reunion dinner and dance is planned for the 22nd (Saturday), with a buffet breakfast (and plenty of biscuits and gravy for me ... I hope) the next morning.
For those wishing to spend the night, a block of rooms will be available at the hotel.
Registration forms will be mailed out to all current BHSAA members very soon.
Okay, so how does one join the Banning High School Alumni Association?
Gee. I thought you'd never ask. And I'll tell you.
Membership to the Association is $6.00 per year, and may be paid either by check or money order (made payable to: BANNING HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION). You can contact Kevin for a registration form two ways:
Snail mail: BHSAA, P.O. Box 1013, Banning, CA 92220.
Again, I stress that the Association is more than just a group of grads getting together once in a while to sing "Hail to our dear old Banning High..." (each in their own key, of course). There's more -- much more.
Check it out ... and I hope to see many of you in June.
Our prayers and thoughts go out to Jolene Betlach Bilicke as she is recovering from outpatient hernia surgery performed last Wednesday, January 23. Get well soon, JoJo!
Hey gang ... I could use your help.
I have this book ... I call it my "Big Green Book" ... in which I keep all of that pertinent information about our classmates -- birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
And yes ... it's in hardcover.
Anyway, I use that to publish classmates' b-days and anniversaries in the "Events, News and Other Happenings" section. Unfortunately, I don't have everyone's info.
So, I would like to have all of you sit down and send me afore-mentioned info. And, yes -- your spouses and children can have their birthdays published, but you can use your own judgement on your ex-spouses. I won't publish my ex-wives birthdays, if that helps.
Don't forget about the January poll on the BRONCOS 4EVER Poll page: "What has been your biggest accomplishment since leaving Banning High?"

Be sure to pass this address on to all of our Classmates, and keep it in your list of favorites.

If you have any birthdays or anniversaries to add -- even as a surprise -- send me an email so I can add them on the "Events, News and Other Happenings" page.
If you know of any more classmates in poor health who could use some Divine Intervention, feel free to let me know so I can add their name to the class Prayer Chain.
That email address again -- toll free from anywhere in the 50 States, Canada, and Paris, Texas:
That is a link you can click on, by the way.
Sorry, no Eiffel Tower or Arc d'Triumphe in this town of 25,000 inhabitants (according to the 1990 U.S. Census). It's 95 miles northeast from where J.R. got shot several years ago.
You know ... Dallas?
GOD BLESS AMERICA.
Until next time ...
